Airfield Lighting Computer Systems

Five D Enterprises has installed varying types of airfield lighting computerized and non computerized control systems at multiple airports.

CAE We installed a Crouse Hinds digitrac system at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in Columbia, South Carolina. This is a fully functional system with touch screen control from the Tower, Both Vaults and Maintenance. All circuts are monitored for commands, responses, voltage, amperage, load and conductor insulation resistance integrity in MEG ohms, and burned out lamps. We installed a new fiber optic link along with a back up spread spectrum frequency hopping radio link between all points. The interesting part of this project was the diversity of locations that were occupied by parts of the system. The tower is older and there was no room for the tower functon computer rack in the tower. Instead, it was located in the distant side of a base building adjacent to the tower, however, the radio hub for the whole system remained on the tower along with the touch screen in the cab. In addition to that there are two vaults, a distant maintenance shop and a radio controlled beacon off the airport property. Due to the prevalence of frequent low Vis conditions a SMGCS lighting configuration was intergrated into the tower control options.

Scott AFB/Mid America We relocated and upgraded the Air Force node of the existing Crouse Hinds ALCS system for Scott Mid America joint use. New Multi mode and single mode fiber was installed for communications to the touch screen ALCS system in the new tower. We installed full monitoring on all existing Air Force regulators (some of which were so old they were no longer in production) and upgraded the system to take control of the red horse installed MALSR's for the Air Force side runway.

Pope AFB We installed a fully functional Crouse Hinds Digitrac ALCS system with new fiber optics between the tower, vault and maintenance. All circuits and regulators are monitored. This project included interfacing with Stop lights on the roads that crossed the approaches on both ends of the runway.

CVG We installed an ADB system at Cincinnati Intl Airport for complete airfield lighting control from the New FAA tower. Because the new tower is located between the parallel R/W's 18/36 L and R we installed dual touch screen control stations on opposite sides of the tower cab. One for the East controller station and one for the West. Naturally, during slow periods with reduced personnel the system can be controlled from one station. The system also included a new fiber optic link between the Tower, Vault and Maintenance complex. Maintenance personnel can monitor the system in real time and, if granted by the tower, take control of the lights from the shop or vault. The system was fully functional with complete monitoring of all circuit commands, responses, amperages, voltages, load, burned out lamp calculations and individual circuit conductor insulation resistance monitoring (IRMS)

Grissom Air Reserve Base We also installed an Allen Bradley PLC based programmable logical controller at Grissom ARB. This system was selected to eliminate the old pilot control interfaces and relays and to eliminate the old defective control cable between the tower and vault. It also included pilot control radio control of the whole airfield lighting system, including approaches, after the tower closed. The new control media between the tower and vault is a single shielded twin axial cable with surge suppresson on both ends.

Sabre Heliport, Ft. Campbell We installed another Allen Bradley PLC based programmable logical controller at Sabre Army Heliport, Ft Campbell, KY. This system was installed in support of the new control tower at Sabre and also featured remote I/O interface between the existing vault and regulators and the new tower.

Naturally we offer complete installation of less complicated lighting control systems and radio control systems and many simple conventional systems too. We can draw upon our experience and exposure to a variety of control systems and airfields to provide, design and install a control system to specifically meet your control needs.

One of the most beneficial control modifications we perform is the installation of pilot radio control systems. We allow the pilot to control all of the airfield lighting and any combination of navaids so that these systems do not spend most of there time, therefore energy, lifespan and lamps operating for no purpose. In addition to drastically reducing power bills the lifespan of lamps and equipment is more than doubled.
